H808 – The influence of audience (SA 8.4b)

December 28, 2010

One colleague in H808 raised the point that the status someone has e.g. in a classroom can influence communication as well. I have to agree with her and  I experience for example a big difference if you are the head class teacher, teaching many hours in the class, best of course with a subject they love and where they achieve good grades, or if you are teaching a subject that is considered worthless,  like the economic & management class where I teach biology,  with only two hours spread over the week. I have a different rapport with the students. Being considered as cool, because of having e.g. a Facebook account, or being still young enough as a teacher, are in my experience also great determinator’s of communication. Normally I teach students aged around 16, but this year I teach older students and I have to admit this changes communication as well. The phrase teachers as counsellor and trainer, applies here to a greater extend as with younger students, who still believe that students and teachers are incompatible and you have to deal a lot more with discipline issues.
